Preparing My body for Baby: Supplements

Do you have troubles taking pills? Fortunately I don’t. I toss all of these in my mouth at once and take a big gulp of water and bam they are down.

So what am I taking to help get my body ready?

1.      Prenatal – I have been taking since last August. I have two different brands so I just alternate them…no particular reason but I figure that if one is slightly better tha the other, at least this way I am getting both?

2.      Magnesium/Calcium – this is something I have taken for years….it is not specifically for my #ttc purposes but it is still one of my many pills

3.      Vitamin D 1000 IU – This is something I take daily, all year. My vitamin D levels were fine when we tested in September so I just take 1000 IU to maintain it. Especially living in Toronto, we do not get much sun this time of year!

4.      Omega 3 – again, another one that I have taken for years. I eat a fair bit of seafood each week so I only take one of these each day.

5.      Vitamin E – I have read that this can help increase uterine lining thickness

6.      Inositol 1000mg – this can help with ovulation for those with PCOS (which I may have)

7.      NAC 1000mg – can reduce oxidative stress and help ovulation for those with PCOS

8.      CoQ10 400mg – this can help with egg quality and I have been taking it since November

9.      Aspirin 81 mg – this can help with uterine lining and mine has been very minimal

10.   Melatonin 3mg/night

  1. Ashwagandha 1 tsp/day

12.   Maca powder 1 tsp/day

13.   Ground Flaxseed

I just started the Inositol and NAC two weeks ago – hopefully they help me with ovulation!

Melatonin is one that I have taken for years to help me sleep. I have insomnia and I really find that Melatonin helps me just have a better sleep. It is also something that I have read is recommended for those going through the whole fertility/infertility process so that is convenient.

Ashwagandha has been shown to help with stress, anxiety and depression and I am one high strung lady. I have been taking it for over a year now…I am not totally sure if it helps but I tell myself it does so mind over matter? Placebo effect? Maybe, but that is okay.  Warning though, if you get the powder, it tastes like earth. Not dirt, but earth. If this bothers you, maybe get it in capsule form.

Finally Maca, I have read that this can help with balancing hormones and as mine are out of whack I figure I might as well try. I actually just ran out so I need to buy more. I buy powder and I actually really like it. It tastes sweet to me and I put it on my smoothie.

Speaking of smoothies, I also put ground flaxseed which can help with hormone balancing (again, this is what I have read). I grind them daily in a little spice grinder as you don’t want to keep ground flax too long (it can go rancid quickly). It takes 15 seconds to grind so not a huge commitment!

I know this seems like a LONG list – hopefully, they make a difference and help my body get into tip-top shape on the inside to get me ready to grow a little human!

Happy supplementing!
