I thought so! Until I did all of my research. Jeez, they do not make it easy! I remember girls in high school getting pregnant like it was the easiest thing ever and no one made sure they were fit to be parents. I have a steady career and am an independent woman but getting a little human to care for is such a hurdle!
In case you are interested, there are three kinds of adoption in Ontario:
- Public (Children’s Aid Society) – free but you do not get a baby; likely a toddler to young child, time frame is the shortest
- Private (within Canada) – less than 100/year in Ontario, you create a profile and wait for the birth parent(s) to pick you, they have 28 days after you get the baby to change their mind, approximately 20-30K, likely 2 years minimum
- Private (international) – not all countries will accept a single parent, 30-50K, same time-frame of 2 years minimum
On top of that, for all three, you must complete a 27-hour training and a home study. Now I am not saying anything bad about adoption, I think it is great and if you can do it and are willing to do it then that is wonderful. I, however, am not that confident that I would even get a child within the 2 years. Of the three options, I would want to do Private in Canada because I do want a newborn (no CAS), and especially with the world these days, I don’t know how international travel will be in the future so don’t want to risk any hiccups. So I have to wait for a birth parent to pick me…well what are the odds of them picking a single female when there are a ton of couples out there who want to start families? I am thinking pretty slim.
CAS is a great option but I do know that I want a newborn baby so that is why that option is not for me.
